Mainataining a morgue
When you find a cool magazine article, poster, flyer or something that strikes you and stops you in your tracks, keep it in what designers call their design morgue. It’s a folder or shoebox that houses ideas that are just waiting to be re-animated when you need inspiration. Necrophiles need not apply.
In my personal morgue, I’ve got flyers and magazines from my travels to Australia and Japan and also other promotional materials sent in the mail from designers. It’s also got the occasional magazine clipping from art as well as interior design magazines.
Another valuable resource to maintain is a good library of books and magazines. These reference materials are priceless when you’re drawing a blank at 2 a.m. in the morning. They re-energize you — and without the damaging effects of coffee!
Since I know books are expensive and some might not have the space for a library, I’ve stumbled across some online resources sure to prove useful:
- [Re]Encoded dot Com » Blog Archive » 42 Must-Bookmark Resources for Web Designers - Inspiration, Design, Color, Fonts and More
- Ads of the World great print and marketing efforts from around the world.
- Veer: ideas nice articles that lead into interesting subjects. Not to mention great stock!
- Logopondnice modern designs.
- DBcut Korean design. Different than american designs, you’ll find.
Hope these helped you in some way. Now I must get back to designing a logo identity myself. Corporate colors, here I come!
