Halloween 2007

Spudboy Cheyne!I know this post is a couple weeks late, but I’m just catching up.

This year I went as 1 single member of my favorite band DEVO. Specifically, I guess I went as one of the Bob’s who play keyboards. I had the full ensemble — even a MIDI keyboard. But, when the time came to parade around the streets of Waikiki with the rest of the weirdos, I opted for a whip instead. I didn’t want to risk losing my keyboard in a drunken mistake.

I don’t know who it was that first started it, but it’s an interesting trend: whenever someone would see my costume (no matter how far or near they were in proximity to me) they would shout out “DEVO!!” This struck me as odd because no one does it at the concerts and I never heard anyone else’s costume being called out. No one yelled out “Sexy nurse!” or “Captain Jack!” with the same enthusiasm they did with my DEVO outfit. It’s okay, I liked being singled-out amongst the homogonized crowd of store-bought dress-ups.

Some simple-minded creatures didn’t know who I were. The top three lame-ass guesses for my costume were:

  1. Plunger
  2. Lego-man
  3. Chinese rickshaw

I did some fun shit on Halloween. Courtesy of my friend Michelle, I got to check out a couple of my friends in their Cherry Blossom Burlesque show. Those girls are hot and they kick ass. You know who else is hot? The Hell Caminos. They even graced everyone with their naked presence at the end of the night. I’ve never seen so many shaved ballsacs and tattoos in one place before…

In between vignettes, I wandered over to local gay stop Angles to see what all the young’uns were up to. It turns out not much. It was too stuffy there (and I mean that in all meanings of the word) so I left and went back to the Cherry Blossom show where I felt I belonged.

The night ended with a drunken taxi-cab flag-down contest between me and my friends and the rest of Waikiki. We finally got a cab and I was in bed — and by bed I mean the temporary one on my friend Patrick’s couch — by 1:30 am. Oh what fun us Spuds have when we let go of our inhibitions on night a year.

One Response to “Halloween 2007”

  1. great costume! I’m sure it brought a bit of DEVO nostalgia back for some people… And there was a recent revival on Disney with a kid band redoing the DEVO hits.

I’m glad that you’re back to updating online. I’ve missed it!
